Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County
Housed in an historic mansion, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center has been serving the Long Island community for over a decade, teaching the lessons of the Holocaust to fight prejudice and intolerance today. To assist this effort, Evidence Design transformed the first floor of this beautiful but aging building into a thoughtful introduction to the Holocaust. ﾠWorking closely with the Center’s educators, Evidence Design created a powerful exhibit featuring archival footage, photographs, and local survivors’ testimonies and artifacts.
Evidence Design took the best advantage of the existing array of spaces, each room evocative of the unfolding narrative. ﾠA wedge made of poplar slats segments the main gallery, providing circulation and a fleeting impression of the future glimpsed through its openings. As visitors move around the structure it gradually degrades, echoing the destructive spread of Nazism exhibited on its walls. ﾠSurfaces of concrete serve as the backdrop for testimonies about concentration camps, while window-lit drawings from children of the Theresienstadt ghetto inject a sliver of color into the narrative. The exhibit ends with a call to action and a moving film featuring a local Holocaust survivor, David Gewirtzman, and a Rowandan genocide refugee, Jacqueline Murekatete, underscoring the Center’s message that the world still has much to learn.
